IconOvid: Printing and E-Mailing Citations

The Ovid Citation Manager can be found at the bottom of every page where a list of citations is displayed. While citations may be printed directly from these pages, the print-out will include the Citation Manager and other possibly unwanted material. By reviewing all the results of a search and then using the Citation Manager, you save paper and time by printing only the citations you need in the format that you want. You can also use the Citation Manager to e-mail citations to yourself or someone else.

To use the Citation Manager, you must specify the following:

Citations—Choose to print or e-mail:

  • only those citations in this set that you have selected with a check in the box in front of the citation number, or
  • all the citations on the page you are displaying, or
  • all the citations in the set that you are displaying, or
  • a set of citation numbers that you specify

Fields—Choose in what format the citations will appear. The most popular choices are ‘Citation (Title, Author, Source)’ and ‘Citation + Abstract’.

Citation Format—Leave this setting at ‘Ovid’.

Include Search History—To include your search strategy on your print-out or in your e-mail, put a check here by clicking on the box.

Sort Keys—Use these if you are printing or e-mailing a large set and you want them in a particular order, for example, by publication date or by author.

Action—Choose ‘Print Preview’ or ‘Email’.

• To print your citations, click on ‘Print Preview’. The search history (if requested) and citations will be displayed. Use the print command (or button) on your Internet browser to print the page. Click on a 'Main Search Page' button to continue searching.

• To e-mail your citations, click on ‘Email’ and follow the instructions on the screen that will appear. Be sure to enter your complete e-mail address (for example, ab2345@usp.edu or Somebody@aol.com). To send e-mail to more than one address, separate the addresses with a comma. You may edit the From: and Subject: lines of the e-mail header, and you may write a note in the Annotations: box to appear at the beginning of the e-mail.
