Ovid: Printing Fulltext Articles
Why do I need these instructions? Why can’t I just use the Print button? If you print the article when Ovid first displays it, the graphics (including any tables) will be illegible and you will not be able to understand them. When Ovid full text articles first appear on your computer, they are formatted to save space. The graphics are shown in thumbnail format. To format an article so that you can read all of it, follow these steps:
1. Go to the full text article in Ovid by following a link in Medline (or another database) or by searching Journals@Ovid.
2. Near the top of the article on the right side, find the box labeled ‘Output’. If the fourth choice is ‘Full Text (PDF)’, click on it and skip to 6. PDF files below. If ‘Full Text (PDF)’ does not appear in the ‘Output’ menu, then click on ‘Print Preview’ and continue with 3. below.
3. On the next page called ‘Print Preview Options’, make sure that ‘Full size’ is selected in the menu box and click on the turquoise ‘Continue’ button.
4. The article will be displayed with full-sized graphics and without the ‘Output’ box and other Ovid links. Use the ‘Print’ button on your browser (or File Print) to print the article.
5. To return to the Ovid main search page, click on the browser ‘Back’ button to return to the ‘Print Preview Options’ page and then click on ‘Previous page’ which will take you back to the original display of the article. At this display, click on the blue ‘Main Search Page’ button below the title and author information for the article.
6. PDF files: After you click on the ‘Full Text PDF’ link, a new page will appear with a timer at the top, a new toolbar below it and a scanned image of the article’s first page below that. The complete article may take a few minutes to load. To print the article, use the printer button that appears in the new toolbar NOT the ‘Print’ button in your browser. To return to the Ovid main search page, click on the blue ‘Return to Ovid Session’ button to the right of the timer, then click on the blue ‘Main Search Page’ button below the title and author information for the article.
