PCP Faculty and Students Gather at PPA Annual Conference

Drawing on the Monopoly board game theme, pharmacists from across Pennsylvania gathered in Scranton, Pa., for the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association’s 2012 Annual Conference. This year’s conference was titled "PHARMONOPOLY: A Focus on the Pharmacists' Role in the Patient Centered Medical Home."

The conference from held at the Hilton from Sept. 20-23 was filled with not only continuing education talks and presentations, but activities and information for pharmacy students.

Philadelphia College of Pharmacy faculty participated in numerous presentations:

Dr. Steve Sheaffer presented “Becoming a Preceptor: A Rewarding Experience for Students and Preceptor” with Dr. Mary Ray from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM). Dr. Sheaffer also served as chair for the “Pennsylvania Coalition of Schools of Pharmacy” that met during the conference.

Dr. Dan Hussar presented on “New Drug Update for 2012.”

Dr. Gladys G. Dueñas represented academia for the “Practicing Outside the Box,” a series of presentations on pharmacy practice opportunities in areas outside of the “norm” of retails or hospital practice.

Dr. George Downs presented “Substance Abuse Personal and Professional Responsibility and Risk (Reward and Punishment)” with James Ray, president, Alchemy Consulting, P.C., and Kathie Simpson, SARPH Pharmacy Peer Assistance Program

Dr. Hank Schwartz served as an instructor for the “APhA Immunization Training Program for Pharmacists” that was conducted at the meeting. He also served as faculty advisor for a team of four students who represented PCP in the Achieving Independence Competition. The team developed and presented a poster to a team of judges that reflected their proposal for “innovative concepts for creating an independent pharmacy”.

In addition, Greg Yugov PharmD’12 received the Outstanding PPA Student Award for PCP for his outstanding service to PPA as a student.
Alumni and student visitors (at left) to the PCP booth in the exhibit hall participated in a raffle drawing for an original painting of Griffith Hall. The winner was Ashley Krumenacker PharmD’15, who is holding her prize - a lithograph of Griffith Hall. She is joined by (left ot right) Dr. Hank Schwartz, Director of Annual Giving Katie Battista, Terry Pak PharmD’14, Dr. Steve Sheaffer, and Sean Maydick PharmD’15.
