Proactive Faculty and Students Ahead of ACA Ruling

From the moment healthcare reform was on the horizon, USciences professors began using the policy and wide impacting legislation as a teachable moment for students. When the Supreme Court ruling to uphold the Affordable Care Act was announced on June 28, USciences professor Dr. David Perlman, and his students, were prepared to discuss the impeding changes in full.

"In terms of teaching public health, the passage and upholding of the Affordable Care Act provides an opportunity for students to think creatively about their own health situations and those of their loved ones and how their lives will be affected by its provisions," Perlman said.

The Public Health Ethics and Law course Dr. Perlman was holding the morning of the announcement proved itself to be a stimulating environment for students to share factual speculation and informed justifications. Moving forward, Dr. Perlman will not change the way he teaches; he instead will ensure students truly understand the Affordable Care Act and its ethical and legal ramifications.  

Dr. Tamar Klaiman, assistant professor of health policy and public health, recognizes the opportunity to use the health care reform in her classroom as a learning tool.

“The Supreme Court's upholding of the ACA will not only change the landscape of health and healthcare in America, but will also change how we teach about it,” Dr. Klaiman said. “Giving millions of American's access to preventive services and bolstering the public health system will reframe the conversations we have in class about access, social justice, and prevention,” she added.
