The 7th annual Femi Memorial 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament to benefit the Femi Memorial Fund took place Saturday, March 23. The event brought together 42 volunteers, 90 participants, and another 60-70 in attendance rooting on their favorite team.
The tourney was established to provide an exciting event for the campus while keeping alive the memory of Olufemi "Femi" Paschal Ogunkorode, a third-year pharmacy student, who passed away suddenly on March 23, 2006. USciences alumni, who were close friends of Femi and others who have a special interest with the tournament, came out to support the event as well.
“The most amazing part of this day was looking around seeing our students volunteer for nine hours on a sunny Saturday afternoon,” said Marc Caserio MEd, director of campus recreation. “The majority of the volunteers didn’t even know Femi; however, they helped us because they realize how much Femi and this event means to us. As always it was awesome to see Femi’s family come and hangout with us for a few hours.”
All told, the day raised $2,700.00 for the fund.
Twenty teams vied for the championship. After heated competition, Wale Adefemi PMM'11, and Tournament MVP, guided his squad to the three peat. Adefemi’s team consisted of Yemi Adefemi, Oluwaseun Afuwape, and Shola Cooke.
