The Elixir turned 50 years young this year with staff, contributors, and former editors celebrating the occasion on Friday, April 5. Former editors of the publication from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s were on hand to join in the celebration. USciences' student literary magazine, the Elixir, was started by Prof. Richard Fleu in 1963.

Many of the special guests among the 50 in attendance reminisced about the early days of the publication and offered some words of advice to current students on the value of writing and art in scientific careers.

Professor Christine Flanagan of the Humanities Department and the faculty adviser to the award-winning student publication hosted the celebration and presented prizes to current students for their published poetry, stories, essays, and artwork. Approximately 80 students, faculty, staff, and alumni published in the 50th Anniversary issue. The cover art for the anniversary edition was created by Niki Patel BI’13.

Copies of the 50th anniversary issue of the Elixir were on hand for distribution to those who attended the event and are currently available for members of the USciences community. Those interested in obtaining a copy for $5 should contact Christine Flanagan at c.flanag@usciences.edu.
