Olufemi “Femi” Paschal Ogunkorode was a third-year pharmacy student and distinct achiever at USciences. With great passion for basketball and an endlessly inspiring attitude, Femi brought positive energy into the lives of many.
At just 20 years old, Femi passed away suddenly on March 23, 2006. At that time, his family developed the Femi Memorial Fund to award students who exemplify his memory in learning, sporting, and the community.
USciences celebrates the memory of Femi by donating all proceeds from its annual Femi Memorial 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament to the Femi Memorial Fund. Saturday, March 22, marks the eighth rendition of this tournament, created by Femi’s friends and colleagues at the Athletic/Recreation Center (ARC). The tournament will kick off at 10 a.m. in the ARC.
“Femi loved basketball so much, so Jesse Phillips and I planned to remember and honor his legacy with a 3-on-3 tournament each year, for as long as we are here at USciences,” said Marc Caserio M.Ed, director of campus recreation. “Femi possessed the heart of a true champion and will never be forgotten.”
The 3-on-3 tournament includes trophies for champions and MVPs, as well as a first place prize of $300. Enter the raffles to win an iPad Air or one of $75 gift cards to Jose Garces restaurants. Last year, the competition boasted 90 participants and more than 50 spectators - ultimately raising $2,700 for the Femi Memorial Fund. Tournament M.V.P. Wale Adefemi PMM’11 and his teammates Oluwaseun Afuwape, and Shola Cooke took home the top tournament prize.
“The day Femi passed was one of the most difficult I have ever had; he was not just a part of the ARC family, but a great friend, as well,” said Caserio. “I learned a lot from him, and will never forget his passion to succeed in every aspect of life.”
Raffle tickets are now on sale, and team signups are due by March 18
