Change Comes to USciences Athletics
Posted: Thursday, July 31, 2014
Athletic director Paul Klimitas HonAlm'05 has left the University after a 38-year career.

Paul was appointed to the USciences faculty in 1976, was a member of the Athletic Department and was the head varsity rifle coach for 35 years. He chaired the Department of Physical Education from 2001 to 2014 and taught as an assistant professor from 1976 to 2014. Prior to his promotion to athletic director in 2011, he was the longest consecutive tenured rifle coach in national collegiate varsity history.

Over the course of his tenure, he was assistant basketball coach and driver for various teams for 25 years and he served as intramural director (once boasting a 58% school-wide participation rate), women’s softball coach, men’s soccer coach and men’s golf coach.  Paul, as associate athletic director and compliance officer, helped the institution transition from NAIA to active NCAA Division II membership in 2003.

“As many of you know, I have left the University after 38-years. Over the years I have gotten to know many of you and greatly value the friendships I have made,” Klimitas said in an email to alumni. “I will continue to support the University by lending whatever support I can for the scholarship named in my honor. I hope that you will continue to support the Paul Klimitas Honorary Scholarship Fund and those funds, programs and activities that support USciences Athletics. Thank you for all the good wishes.”

The University is beginning its search for a new athletic director. In the meantime, director of campus recreation Marc Caserio will serve as interim athletic director. Marc joined USciences in 2003 and was promoted to director of campus recreation in 2007. He is currently working toward his EdD which he expects to receive in December 2014.

“Please join me in wishing Paul all the best and thanking him for his years of service and dedication to USciences,” said president Dr. Helen Giles-Gee in her announcement to campus.
