Ten student-pharmacists from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy converged on the Capitol for the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association (PPA) Pharmacy Legislative Day on Tuesday, April 9. The students and their faculty advisors helped to “paint” the Capitol white, wearing their lab coats as they pushed the theme of the day: “Pharmacists Making It Fair for Local Care.” All told, 270 pharmacy students from Pennsylvania's seven schools of pharmacy joined more than 75 pharmacists in the Capitol that day, participating in the Pharmacy Rally and making more than 145 legislative visits throughout the day.

Participants met individually with legislators or staffers to discuss the important pharmacy issues of the Day: PBM transparency, fair audits and expanded immunization abilities, including permitting trained student interns to provide immunizations under the supervision of a pharmacist. It was a valuable opportunity for PPA members to have their voices heard while educating legislators about pharmacists and their concerns.

For Pharmacy Legislative Day, each of the seven Pennsylvania pharmacy schools set up informational displays in the East Rotunda of the Capitol. Information made available to legislators included: medication safety and disposal, medication adherence, immunization awareness, hypertension assessment, heart health and blood pressure screenings, smoking cessation, hearing tests and carbon monoxide poisoning. The Philadelphia College of Pharmacy table focused on medication safety and disposal. Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association also arranged for group tours of the Capitol and some special legislative meetings for students.

Founded in 1878, the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association is a professional membership organization of more than 2,000 pharmacists and pharmacy students across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, representing almost all facets of pharmacy practice. As the leading voice of pharmacy in Pennsylvania, it promotes the profession through advocacy, education, and communication to enhance patient care and public health.
