University of the Sciences requires students to maintain active health insurance coverage while in attendance at the University. The health insurance requirement serves to insure the academic success and overall health and wellness of our student body. The policy is consistent with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the American College Health Association’s Standards for Student Health Insurance Benefits Programs. In addition, health insurance coverage is a prerequisite for participation in experiential training by any student enrolled in a health professional program at the University.
Undergraduate students registered for at least 6 credits, Graduate students registered for at least 5 credits, and all International F1 Visa students are required to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) each academic year. Students who are able to demonstrate comparable coverage may be able to opt of the SHIP.
• Students are required to carry health insurance coverage through the SHIP or through an alternative plan comparable in nature.
• Prior to first attendance at the University and Annually thereafter, students must complete the online student health insurance enrollment/waiver process.
• Students with health insurance coverage must sign an online waiver demonstrating coverage comparable to the University-sponsored plan by the deadline. Students must verify that the basic benefits provided by the SHIP are included in your current health insurance policy. If any of these benefits are not covered through your current policy, you will not be considered sufficiently insured and will be enrolled in the SHIP.
o A waiver providing proof of coverage must be signed Every Year (fall semester), even if your coverage has not changed. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the Insurance Coordinator of any changes in health insurance coverage during the academic year.
o If personal health insurance coverage is terminated, students have 30 days from the date coverage was lost to enroll in the SHIP.
o Students who fail to complete the waiver process prior to the deadline will be subject to mandatory enrollment in the SHIP, a $25.00 processing fee, and billing of the annual premium amount to their Student Account upon close of the Course Registration “Drop/Add” Period. Once enrolled in the plan, removal will require a letter of appeal to Student Health and Counseling and be at the discretion of the insurance plan, and will include a processing fee of $25.00.
• Students without health insurance must enroll in the SHIP by the deadline. Students who do not voluntarily enroll will be automatically enrolled upon close of the "Drop/Add" period and subject to a $25.00 processing fee.
• All International F1 Visa students are Required to enroll in the SHIP by the deadline each year and while in attendance at the University, regardless of credit load.
Students who have insurance coverage may apply for a waiver to opt out of the SHIP. The waiver application is available online during the scheduled waiver periods.
All waiver applications and documentation must be received by the deadline. No exceptions.
Yes. Approved waivers are effective for the current academic year. A new waiver application must be submitted by the appropriate deadline each academic year, even if your health insurance coverage has not changed.
In order to be eligible for a waiver from the SHIP, a students' personal health insurance plan must offer equivalent or greater benefits than what the SHIP offers. You must complete the online waiver each academic year in order to verify that the basic benefits provided by the SHIP are included in your current health insurance policy. If any of these benefits are not covered through your current policy, you will not be considered sufficiently insured and will be enrolled in the SHIP. The basic benefits for comparable coverage are:
Students are required to maintain active health insurance coverage while in attendance at the University. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the Insurance Coordinator of any changes in health insurance coverage during the academic year. If your insurance coverage terminates, you must submit proof comparable coverage in another plan or enroll in the SHIP.
To obtain coverage through the SHIP, please contact the Insurance Coordinator, Ms. Alicia C. Miller, MPH, by phone (215.596.8536) or by email (firstname.lastname@example.org). You will need to complete an enrollment application and submit documentation of prior coverage within 30 days of your termination date. The effective date of coverage under the SHIP is the date previous coverage was lost and the premium will be adjusted/pro-rated accordingly.
Students without health insurance coverage must enroll in the SHIP. The enrollment application is available online during the scheduled open enrollment periods. Students who do not voluntarily enroll will be automatically enrolled upon close of the "Drop/Add" period.
The cost for annual coverage is $1,731 and is charged to your Student Account at the close of the Course Registration "Drop/Add" Period.
Annual Coverage - August 15, 2015 through August 14, 2016
Spring Coverage - January 11, 2016 through August 14, 2016
Summer Coverage - May 1, 2016 through August 14, 2016
Please note: The University-sponsored insurance plan is an annual policy. As a result, the insurance underwriter does not allow for premature exit from the contact between the student and the insurance company even if you separated from the University.
